The construction and form of the bookwork set it apart from ordinary mass market books. It is a craft object where content and form come together to create an artwork that can be admired for its physical beauty and engaged with by opening it up. Books can take our minds away from the present moment into the realm of imagination, memory and aspiration. Likewise the bookwork is a vehicle for thought and expression. This blog looks at the book as art and all things related to books.

This is a bold and bright exhibition. After going past on the bus a few times I had to go in. Immediately inside the gallery artists Brian McKenzie, David Mitchell and Grania Hayes had displayed their artists books.
David Holah gave an informative talk about his printmaking process. His print is on the A5 flyer (above). He combines various techniques into one print composing the elements like a jigsaw puzzle using registration. I liked his use of sandpaper to create the cheek and his idea of cutting the lino into a shape rather than using it as a rectangular block.
Holah also incorporates stitch into his prints and has made a wonderful mixed relief and stitch book: 'The Observers Book of the Observed and Observing'.
