Endless Stair

Its an Esher-like structure tricking the eye. These inter-locking staircases have been made from American tulipwood cross-laminated timber designed by dRMM.

Positioned on the lawn in front of Tate Modern it compliments the building work going on round the back.

By climbing up the staircase and standing underneath I got a real appreciation of the structure.

Its open and exposed without purpose or direction - very unlike staircases in buildings.

Taking the staircase out of the building and subverting its form to make it non-functional gives the passer-by a novel experience.

Looking at structures like this helps me in my consideration of the book as a 3D object and structure. And considering shapes and objects in new contexts engages the imagination.

Is timber the new concrete? Tulipwood is a plentiful and sustainable American hardwood export. Will we see more examples of cross-laminated timber in the future?
