INSTITUTE OF MAKING

notes from BBC Radio 4 Tues 11 March 2014 - Life Scientific

we get hands on understanding from actually making and not just thinking about it ...so what do we produce?

we interact with the world through touching ...we need to think better about the things that we make as a society and get a greater range of people involved in the design process .....multi-disciplinary research is vital...

but how can this happen as most universities are set up for single disciplinary activity...there is a value system in science and broadening out too much is risky

but making tangible prototypes is as valuable as a research paper .....
however those who think and speak seem to end up in power in this society
and yet some of us just like making
making is as important as reading and writing...making is an intrinsic knowledge..a deep knowledge that is hard to put into words

materials libraries are growing and becoming popular  ....get away from the consumerist society and make things in an hackspace yes a public workshop!
we now have access to information thanks to the web but where is the space to play around with stuff .....we have outsourced most of our making - manufacture aboard!
