Reading 'Art Monthly' Feb 13 -363 I was interested by Jonas Mekas answer to the question Do you call your films 'art'? in the interview with Gilda Williams
entitled 'Remains of the Day' (p1-p4). Here is a direct quote of part of his answer:
To decide what is 'art' and what is 'not art' makes no sense. We must always remember that what have left of art, what we call 'art history', is just what managed to survive. It is not the whole story.
......What we see in the museums or what is written about in books, what we study in schools as 'art history', in truth is only the miserable leftovers that happened to survive the horrors of the past.
So what about all the artists who never got collected by patrons or had their
works exhibited in art galleries? What about that undocumented history?
