OFF THE PAGE

'OFF THE PAGE' part of the 'Press & Release' exhibition 2013

The afternoon started with a talk by Borbonesa. They shared a quote with us:
'Books are embalmed minds' Christian Nestell Bovee and began by explaining how they got into making books. Having been at school together they went off to different universities to study art and afterwards got a house share in Brighton
and began to collaborate on art projects.

A bourbonesa tart was distributed and made people sick! Bourbonesa's ideas are mildly anarchic.

Using collage, altering each others text and working on a small scale with limited resources they started by producing a series of handstamped booklets which they distributed around Brighton. The quarterly 'Turtle Soup' appeared next and they began to sell at book fairs.

It was inspiring to see their stunning graphic artwork, admire their attention to detail and learn how how they had developed as individual artists as well as a collective through taking on various projects. Now they have work in the current 'Press & Release' exhibition and are running school workshops with a screening
happening in June.

After the talk I participated in making a large collage with the Sussex Book Art
Collective:

Here's the page I made.

At the Bookends Lounge I was able to make books and share my own bookworks I had brought with me. Here below is some of the work that
has been produced while the exhibition has been running.

And here below is the structure I made from thick paper with a grass and butterfly cover leaving the contents to be added by another visitor:

In the foreground is a collaborative collage book in the making.

a great afternoon of book art and an exhibition
well worth going to.....
