Trace

trace

This word came to mind over a week ago when I was thinking about having a sense of purpose for this blog and my book art. At present I post items about books in general and book arts in particular and I post pictures of book works I have made or am making. Now I want to have a focus and engage in a process. I am avoiding using the term 'theme' or 'project'.

'trace' is the word that came to mind. It has possibility. I can see that even before I look up its various meanings. I have been helped in my thinking by a display devised by curator Helen Little at the Tate Britain. It is Focus 5 'Charles Harrison and Conceptual Art in Britain'. This display looks at Harrison as a curator. He was much else besides. In the 1960s and 70s Harrison was part of a group of artists seeking to redefine art after decades of modernism. Concept, process and activity became  more important  that the finished art object and the art extended beyond the confines of the gallery. Harrison curated this new art in a series of exhibitions and this display brings together material from Harrison's archive. It shows how experimental this art was.

I have latched on to art as process and will use the word 'trace' as a line of enquiry.

What is the purpose of a blog? Twitter is thinking out loud in the moment. In my blog I intend to record the process of thinking and making.
